DID YOU KNOW? Funds are available to Veterans and surviving spouses of Veterans to assist them with paying for a caregiver to come to their home.

INTRODUCTION
Millions of America’s senior citizens are veterans or surviving spouses of veterans. As these heroes age, home is where they want to spend their senior years—surrounded by their favorite people and familiar
things.

A little-known Veterans Administration benefit, the Homemaker and Home Health Aide Care programcan help families fund this care. This benefit assists those who qualify for up to 168 hours a week to assist in keeping them independent at home.

Qualifications for the Homemaker and Home Health Aide Program

The Homemaker and Home Health Aide program is available to:

  • Any Veteran enrolled in VA health care
  • A referral coming from Veterans Service Coordinators
  • Military, Naval, or Air service members who were separated under any condition other than dishonorable.
  • Current and former members of the Reserves or National Guard who were called to active duty (other than for training onlyby federal order and completed the full period for which they were called or ordered to active duty.

Duty Requirements

  • Served 24 continuous months or the full period for which they were called to active duty to be eligible.
  • Exceptions: Those who were discharged for hardship or received an “early out.“

If not currently enrolled in VA health care, Veterans should apply to determine their eligibility.

VA Respite Program

This VA program covers respite care and temporary home care for veterans Applicants must go through an interdisciplinary assessment from social workers, medical doctors, and registered nurses. To qualify, you must meet one of the following:

  • Three or more ADL dependencies
  • Significant cognitive impairment
